Many students in my classroom have autism. This sometimes creates barriers in communicating or understanding peers. When communication issues arise, students with autism may not always respond appropriately (hitting, pushing, screaming). The goal of this project is to provide my students with autism more tools to play with on the playground. The items were selected to allow for students to play individually or in a small group of friends. In the fifth grade, many of my students prefer to play basketball or baseball. This leaves my students with autism either playing in a tense game of basketball or baseball, or playing by themselves. More appropriate playgroup equipment will allow them to continue developing social skills, but not putting them in an intense situation, that may be too overstimulating for them.
