During the COVID-19 pandemic, my students will be learning speech, language and communication skills at home. Sometimes my students will do projects with family members or independently after seeing a video I make for them. Sometimes we will do a project together during a Zoom meeting. My students learn communication skills best when they are engaged in activities such as art projects or manipulating objects. To participate in these meaningful learning activities, my students need access to materials to complete the art project and access to materials they can move. For example, they could move animals to demonstrate understanding of the concepts: apart, together or first, second, last. Using hands on materials gives my students a way to connect with concepts, recall these concepts later and be able to share with their family.
