I am an elementary school-based speech-language pathologist. I use a literacy-based approach to speech and language therapy and have realized my personal library is significantly lacking in books that feature children from diverse backgrounds. Our school population is beautifully diverse and I dream of providing my students with literature that features children who look like them and celebrates cultural and ethnic diversity. I will use the books in my library to help my children reach their individualized communication goals, from learning to produce a disordered speech sound to understanding and using complex language structures.
