Until March 2020, my students were used to receiving speech and language therapy services face-to-face in an educational setting (therapy area or within the classroom). We played with games and toys. We read books. We cut, colored, and glued. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit NYC and our school, along with all other NYC public schools, were forced to close. We had one week to prepare to switch to distance learning, including teletherapy so their mandated services could continue at home. It was an adjustment for myself, my students, and my students' families. This was a totally new learning style. My first thought was how is this going to work? How could I recreate therapy through Google Meet and Google Classroom? My students were really responsive to a variety of digital resources that I had bought from Teachers Pay Teachers. We were able to use make inferences using real-life photo scenes, play interactive Boom Learning games to practice new words, complete worksheet activities for the books we were reading, and participate in activities support social emotional skills (more important than ever!). Teletherapy is continuing this fall. Some of my students will be learning from home full-time while others will be participating in blended learning (alternating between in-person and distance learning). The flexibility to purchase my own digital materials will be a great assistance to help make this school year go just a little smoother. What I love about Teachers Pay Teachers is that the materials are created by other speech language pathologists who work with students just like mine. I can purchase materials to support my students' individual needs. Those needs are always changing as they grow. I hope these new resources will keep my students engaged and motivated all year long!
