Manipulatives are a key learning factor for most students. When beginning to learn something new, students learn best when they are able to get their hands on the what they are learning and really apply the various skills needed. After a year where most students have missed out on manipulatives, it is important for my class to have individualized materials that they are able to use. My students have had better understanding of a skill when the are able to use manipulatives. For example, when working on spelling and sight words they will be able to use various magnetic letters to create new words. This makes spelling more engaging for students. In math, by having counters, 3-D shapes, pattern blocks, etc. they are able to grasp the various skills that are needed to understand broad concepts!
