The magazines I am requesting will provide critical reading and writing opportunities for students already facing regressive patterns in reading and writing achievement since the closure of schools in March. It is very difficult to find age-appropriate, interesting, and engaging reading materials that my struggling readers actually want to read with topics that draw the most reluctant students in class discussions. Our class has found that connection with Scholastic Scope magazines which are specifically designed for high-interest articles for struggling readers. Since I have the same students all 4 years of high school the other issue is finding new and engaging materials at an economical price every year and Scholastic Magazines are the perfect answer. Last year my students were disappointed when I was unable to provide an annual subscription to Scholastic Action Magazines and they asked to revisit the old issues. I promised them that this year I would find a way to provide current ones. This year with my class divided between virtual education and in person face-to-face education it is even more important to have materials that give all students in my class the same access to engaging reading and writing materials for students with a variety of reading levels. Scholastic Action magazines offer both print and electronic versions for students and also offer a variety of scaffolding and remediation exercises, as well as a variety of reading levels for their articles and activities. Having this subscription this year will make the difference between meeting ALL of my student's reading needs vs. providing a program that meets some of the needs!
