These materials will help my students in numerous ways. These books are College Board level reading materials that my At-Risk students don't often have access to. Many times At-Risk students are given lower-level and outdated materials because we attend a poorer school district.
I strive to get these books into their hands so they can see a world outside of their own.The books are diverse and will provide rich reading material regarding other backgrounds and cultures. The Kite Runner is a diverse book about Afghanistan and friendship and loyalty and the power of forgiveness. The Color of Water is a memoir written by a biracial man who struggles with his identify but conquers his demons to lead a life of success.
These books will be outside reading material. They read during their own time, and then they come back to class so we can discuss and analyze. It is the perfect way to create a bridge between their lives and the college world ahead of them. From class discussions, journaling, presentations, essays, quizzes, you name it! Reading these novels opens the world to them and better prepares them for their academic lives.
