This fall, indoor learning is going to be tough. My classroom is on the 2nd floor of our school, on the sunny side, and is not air conditioned. This year, we are not allowed to use fans as we typically would, and both students and teachers must keep masks on at all times in the classroom. Additionally, I teach a class of lower level English students, many of whom have sensory issues that make mask wearing uncomfortable, or even impossible. I anticipate these issues will be distractions and barriers to learning for many of my students. For these reasons, I have begun to organize a shady outdoor classroom space on our school campus that I intend to use daily with my classes (in reasonable weather). However, there are no funds available for me to outfit this space with even the simple materials necessary to conduct a high school class. Due to cleaning requirements this year, I need easily-cleaned seating. Therefore, I would like to provide students with stack-able plastic stools and plastic clipboards, and to install a waterproof whiteboard for teacher use. Additionally, a clear durable tarp over our outdoor classroom will allow for this space to be used even in less than ideal weather, without limiting natural lighting. By bringing my class "inside out," we will be able to remove our masks for a much more comfortable learning experience, with safe, sanitizable equipment, all while remaining socially distanced. Thank you for helping me make this happen!
