My students are learning about their identities and their place in the world. In school, they need to see themselves in the texts that they read and they need to read and learn about the experiences of others to gain perspective. Each book on this list will help students to understand themselves and others. Diverse texts encourage inclusion and empathy. In addition, these texts lead to rich and powerful discussions in which students express themselves and learn to listen to others. They learn to formulate and share their own opinions. I know that these rich texts will be powerful teaching tools in my classroom.
