The beginning of Kindergarten is a huge adjustment for children and their families. Normally, I would spend weeks setting expectations and addressing the many emotions that come with starting school and being away from loved ones. My classroom is full of diverse backgrounds and cultures, so it is important to address the wonderful aspects that make each of them special. I do this mostly through stories. Watching my students connect to characters and share their similar experiences begins a conversation and creates close bonds that we can build on throughout the year. I plan to read these stories during virtual meetings so we can still have conversations that will help us learn about each other and acknowledge the feelings that will come with this virtual experience. Now my students are with their families full time and learning through a screen. These books will expand my classroom library so each child can relate to a character or their emotions about this new school year. I am eager to create a classroom where students feel heard and validated.
