The reading books chosen will be sent home to my children's families. Few have books of their own in their homes. Most of the books they have are dog-eared, hand-me-downs that they borrow from friends and the library. To be able to give them books that they can call "their own" picked especially for them would send them through the roof!
Independence is a characteristic that I have fostered in my children, especially when they are given opportunities to make choices. The book bins that I have chosen will allow me to organize the new books, so that my children can decide for themselves which stories fascinate them, thrill them, and put them into a new world beyond their imagination. That is not an opportunity that they often get with their other teachers.
Lastly, the stools will give my students comfort. All of our chairs are so hard and out-sized for first and second graders. To have a chair that is right for their size--with a little uniqueness to boot--allows them to release a little bit more stress and focus on classroom learning a little bit more.
