In the reading standards for literature K-5, all grade levels have standards in a section titled "Integration of Knowledge and Ideas." The books I have selected will allow students to incorporate each specific grade-level standard. The diverse character books I selected will allow for a mixture of engaging teacher read alouds and books students can choose from during independent reading time. Student motivation always increases when students have brand new crisp books to choose from, and classroom discussions are strengthened when teachers have quality books with complex characters and topics.
