These children's books are one school-appropriate way to focus conversations around race, racism, resistance, and social emotional learning in the classroom. If children are old enough to experience racism, then we must have conversations with them that help them navigate these difficult experiences. These books will make my students feel seen and understood, and help guide them toward empathy, social justice, and equality. I want my students to know they are unique, while respecting their classmates around them. It is essential that my students develop a healthy racial identity. These books will help guide my students towards recognizing and resisting racial inequality. They will make a difference not only in our classroom learning, but in their future lives. The books in this project are from the theconsciouskid.org's and idealbookshelf.com's lists of recommended children's books to support conversations on race, racism, and resistance.
