The materials for this project will be used to create a full Social-Emotional Learning Library for our school through the counseling office! The materials, which will be picture books, will be used by the counselor for in-class lessons for all students in the school, as well as with students in small-group and individual counseling to focus on certain skills. The SEL Library will also be available for teachers to incorporate SEL within their own classroom environments to reinforce and support social-emotional learning skills in order to promote a positive and healthy class climate. Social-Emotional Learning, or SEL, broadly is the collection of skills we need to understand and manage our own emotions and the emotions of others, and help us to interact with others. SEL is increasingly being recognized for its benefits in being taught to students, and are a skill set shown through research to be preferred by employers compared to other skills. Some of the many benefits that social-emotional learning provides include reducing behavior issues, increasing academic achievement, and reducing instances of emotional distress, for instance, from anxiety. These skills, which can cover everything from empathy, anger management, problem-solving, and self-esteem, are skills that need to be taught to students, both through modeling and explicit instruction. Picture books are developmentally-appropriate resources to use to engage and teacher learners these skills. The materials purchased through this fund will be accessible for the entire school and will impact not only the individuals utilizing the materials, but the entire school environment. I would like to get a large collection of SEL texts on a variety of topics to meet the needs of all learners, and this project will be something that can be used in-person and virtually and can be re-used for years to come.
