I would like each student to have a copy of the book to improve their reading skills in class and at home. This book in particular is very special to the 8th grade age group because it was written by an 8th grade girl during the Holocaust. I really want to work with this book during the school year to demonstrate to the young adult population how powerful the words of an 8th grader can be; how they can make change, and how they can impact the world. While we read this book in class I want the students to pull out sections that represent enduring issues represented during the time period. I want the students to find information about enduring issues such as human rights violations, conflict, power, and human impact on the environment. Through out the unit the students will gather this evidence and will work to turn their excerpts into a poem. I want the students to pick a theme that relates to an enduring issue of their choice; then to take pieces of the book and make it into a poem that is unique to their thinking. Thank you so much!
