As an Occupational Therapist working with students with Autism and other Developmental Delays, my goal has always been to provide the tools and strategies that are needed to help each student thrive in his/her school environment, at home, and in their respective community. This goal necessitates that I work with teachers and parents to develop and carry out a specific plan to address each student’s unique needs while also working with students individually and in groups. For example, I often recommend and provide adapted scissors, pencils, writing paper, and other tools and materials for the students who present with underdeveloped fine motor skills. In past years, it was customary for the tools and materials that are used during therapy to be shared amongst the various students that I work with. However, in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and with most students attending school in a hybrid model, with some 100% remote, it is now necessary that each student has his/her own materials that will not be shared with others. The requested supplies will be combined to create a “Fine Motor Kit” based on the unique needs of each of my students. Each student will be provided with their individualized kit to be used in the classroom or at home (if their parents opted for 100% remote learning).
