My students are constantly engaged in art lessons. We learn about drawing, optical illusions, the color wheel, artist biographies. Art subjects encourage self-expression and creativity and can build confidence as well as a sense of individual identity. In addition to time and some grasp on the actual skill itself, art teaches the ability to follow something through to completion and to handle errors or problems as they arise. Our young artists express themselves with uninhibited, purely imaginative joy. Whereas we actively encourage older students and adults to “think outside the box,” our elementary students aren’t even aware the “box” exists.
