We have had to re-imagine what learning looks like in the classroom. Gone are the days where my students can come to school and enter into a warm and inviting classroom where they collaborate and come together regularly. For their safety, separation is best, but what they need most is community. Not being at school, not having that safe place, having your "normal" ripped away from you is traumatic. Students are going to have big feelings related to what they have experienced. They are going to need to learn how to recognize and regulate these emotions now more than ever. They are also going to need to be empathetic towards their friends who need more support with their feelings. Exposure to literature is a great way for students to recognize these big feelings and gain skills on how to work through them. These books will do just that for my students. They will bring back a sense of normalcy, help to build trust, and foster a sense of security they desperately need.
