Like many teachers recently, I've done some reflecting on the literary canon. Though I still have a strong affinity for the "classics," I believe my students could use more variety in their novel units, when it comes to race. There are thousands of novels to choose from, but I believe "Just Mercy" has the most potential in shifting my students' perspectives on race relations. It is time for education to start normalizing underrepresented voices when it comes to curriculum. I would argue that at my school in particular, students aren't seeing the "whole picture" of what it means to be African-American. They haven't developed the empathy necessary for making some of the social change we need in this world. Help me help them help others.
