For the past several years, I have had multiple special needs children in my general education classroom. With special needs come special items. I have taught students that needed pencil grips to make their writing more legible and less strenuous on their little hands. I have taught students who, although very intelligent, were inattentive to lessons because of their excessive need to move and fidget about. I have found wiggle cushions and bouncy bands helpful for these students. I have also taught children who have had sensitivities to light and sound, and I have found that light covers and sound-decreasing headphones were helpful to these students. With the items on my list, I hope to make my classroom a calm, warm, and inclusive environment, where students feel comfortable learning.
