In my classroom there are a wide variety of ethnicities, cultures, languages, and backgrounds represented. It is my mission to make sure that my students feel celebrated and that the curriculum is relevant to their lives. I recently got to see my new classroom for the first time and I immediately surveyed the books. I found a pile of worn books in the corner. The books are mostly Eurocentric classics and feature only white protagonists. Especially during this time in our country I want to bring books into the classroom that provide my students with diverse perspectives. I want to buy books that celebrate their identities and also offer opportunities for discussion on complex topics like race, family structure, and gender. Not only will these books benefit my class this year but also will stay in my classroom throughout my teaching career. I will also use these books to plan distance learning lessons with engaging read alouds and class discussions. Reading is a powerful tool that opens a myriad of possibilities for my students.
