As we start our school year doing distance learning from home, I would like to engage students in reading great literature right off the bat. By starting the year with an exciting novel full of complex characters, difficult situations and amazing storytelling, I can capture students' imaginations and hook them into learning from day one. Last school year ended with emergency schooling from home and it wasn't a great experience for all kids, but starting this year with this wonderful whole-group novel study can start this year of with a bang! Several students are not looking forward to starting school from home and may be reluctant to engage. This particular novel, Esperanza Rising, is always a class favorite. Rather than me reading it to them, I would like to start the year with each child having a copy in their own hands to engage with the rich vocabulary and interesting story. My hope is that we will start the year positively and it will help students have and maintain a positive learning attitude throughout our distance learning time.
