My school is located in rural Western Nebraska where students are not exposed to diverse people, backgrounds, and stories like elsewhere in the country. I am a big believer in Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop's concept of mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors. I want to introduce students to texts that reflect who they are, allow them to see into the lives of those who are different from them, and encourage them to step outside of their comfort zones. Funding this project will place individual choice reading books in my classroom that offer diverse perspectives. These books will be mirrors for some students and windows for others.
