The classroom I'm going into has a lot of great books in it, but they aren't contemporary or diverse. Reading classic literature is important, but when classic works are the only ones being read students can come to think of all literature as something old and out of touch with their lived experiences. The books selected here are contemporary and diverse, allowing students to encounter literature that speaks to them in a more direct way. I attempted to include literature from authors from a variety of culture backgrounds with works of fiction, nonfiction and poetry included.
