The novels, "The Poet X", by Elizabeth Acevedo and "All American Boys", by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely are powerful, relevant works that will open my students' minds and hearts. Because the texts we have at my school largely present a white perspective of American life and culture, I would like to offer my students novels that expose them to life experiences of characters of color. They will read at their own pace, reflect on messages presented, discuss characters and conflicts, and create a collaborative project. I feel strongly that students should have copies of these books, so they can take a break from screens during remote learning. My hope is that they can read outside or at least away from their remote workspace. Thank you for helping me create a more inclusive classroom for our future leaders!
