I strongly believe in the power of music (especially calming music) to get a scholar in the zone. Throughout my 3 classes of 28 students each with an array of needs, abilities, and language proficiencies, it will be so helpful to turn students to their (previously sanitized) headphones and our class study playlist when it comes time for them to be released to do independent work - especially when that work is writing. As I circulate the room working (and talking) to students 1 on 1 or in small groups, I don't those conversations to inhibit the thought or workflow of another student. I love the sound of a class full of eager student voices, and I encourage that sound often. However, I also love the sound of a quiet room, filled with those same students who are focused and working intently and creatively to show me what they know.
