During this chaotic time in our world, my 4K students are having to take on a whole new level of learning socially and emotionally. It is important for them to build a good foundation of these skills before they move on to kindergarten and beyond. I have been fortunate to be able to use this and see positive results come from classrooms that are able to use and support a Safe Place for their students. Creating a Safe Place within my classroom will provide a center where children can go to change their state from upset to composed in order to optimize their learning. The Safe Place will be discussed in detail and I will model the appropriate use of the materials. Materials will include tactile pillows used for both comfort and sensory stimulation, timers, fidgets, a private space, etc. These products along with teacher modeling and support can make a difference in the social and emotional development of any child, especially a 4-year-old that is new to school.
