Books are not always accessible for students with such diverse backgrounds and needs like my students'. Though we have public libraries in our area students may not have the means to get to them which mean the only experiences they receive with literacy are through school and the books I provide them as a teacher. Reading a good book is an experience that every student needs at some point in their life; with your donations I will be able to provide my students books with a wide range of genres, topics and reading level so that every student in my room can find a book that interest them. This year especially the availability of a classroom library is critical; in a book students can escape their everyday lives to travel, not just to different parts of the world but to different times in the past and future, along with to made up worlds. When students are provided such a wide variety of books to choose from every reader, struggling or excelling, can find a book that fits them individually and their reading skills. Having a choice in text is especially important for struggling readers because the availability of choices encourages them to take an interest in their own learning and fluency. I have also included a 12 cube storage shelf for the classroom. This new shelf will make the books more easily for students to see and briefly look at when choosing the perfect book. My goal of this entire project is to help students experience the world through literacy and cultivate a culture that supports a love of reading.
