Moving to a new district and beginning with little resources and supplies is tough in itself. When we add in the online students who are now responsible to go spend large amounts of money for a full year of classroom art supplies to use at home, things get confusing and sometimes the students are unable to buy these things. The items in my cart are for classroom students, but they are also for online. In the case that we go fully online, I will be able to make a "grab bag" for students to take home with them. The sad fact is that many of our in class students are lower income and cannot stay home to do online either because of no supervision (because of their working parents), or because they do not have proper resources and internet access at home. If these students are forced to make at home online schooling work, they deserve not to be stranded in the middle of a semester with a unexpected financial situation when they are already dealing with the social emotional trauma related to Covid-19. I would like to have supplies to benefit my in class students, but I would like to know I have enough to share and help my students in need when and if they go online. These extra supplies could also benefit a handful of my current online students that say they do not know if they can afford all of the art supplies needed for this year. No student should have to feel burdened by finances and supplies, especially during an already stressful time.
