Unfortunately, the pandemic negatively affected students' education. Many of the students are far below their expected reading level for second grade, which affects all other subject areas in which they need to use their reading skills. Some struggle with phonemic awareness. A listening center with phonics activities will benefit students who need additional support in phonics and reading. English language learners will greatly benefit from listening to books, because this will expose them to new words and help their vocabulary grow. As a teacher who values diversity and inclusion I strive to meet the needs of my students.
