I took over a classroom from a retiring teacher a couple years ago when I first started teaching. When I started redecorating, I realized that there were many things that needed to be updated around the room (such as whiteboards with holes in them and chalkboards that needed to be covered).
I want my classroom to be as welcoming as possible for both the virtual and in-person teaching that will be happening throughout this school year. I also need to make sure the materials that are in my room are able to be sanitized/cleaned easily. I used to have a rug in my room where we would meet to complete whole group lessons and curtains hanging up in the back of the room to hide the storage shelves that hold materials we use throughout the school year. Because of COVID19, both of these have to be put in storage because they cannot be easily cleaned. I plan to use the shower curtains to replace the cloth curtains I used to have and the whiteboard paper to create a new meeting area that I can use when I record my morning meeting for my students. The transition from summer to school this year is going to be tough. I want my students to walk into my room and instantly feel "at home" in this learning space.
