As a school social worker my role is to work directly with students on their IEP goals in the areas of social skills, self-regulation, emotion management, and problem solving. Our students in our program have Autism or Autism like characteristics, which include challenges in social skills, understanding social cues/nonverbal language, communication and sensory regulation. They will be doing in person learning and one of the biggest challenges they will have is understanding the new rules of socializing. This year the rules are changing and our kids who struggle to understand social norms in general, will be expected to understand new norms such as why we wear masks, and why we can no longer share materials or be close by our peers. The books requested will help our students understand mask wearing, social distancing and all the new rules in a fun way. Other books will help the students master their goals on emotional regulation and problem solving. The flexible seating that is requested helps our students to maintain focus while remaining in their designated space, it allows them movement while remaining on their chair. The students I work with have play goals and can no longer share materials with the new guidelines, so having an abundance of toys allows each student to have their own without risking sharing germs. We are excited to welcome out students back but the new rules will create new challenges and this project will help me help our students in the safest way possible!
