Sensory play in an early childhood classroom can look, and feel like so many different things. Filling a tray with sand, and hunting for "buried treasure" in the form of shapes, numbers, and letters, using different tools is a great way for strengthening working memory, fine motor skills, and Kindergarten Readiness. Using things like tweezers, scoops, strainers, and sometimes just our hands, leads to so many learning experiences, as well as providing much needed sensory input for young children. In light of COVID, we can no longer have a sensory center, so by setting up individual sensory stations, this gives my favorite little friends the chance to partake in a very important part of early childhood education.
