Enhancing my sixth grade science classroom with a hydroponics system would aid in bringing our curriculum to life. Children would be hands-on in the selecting and growing of all seedlings. In addition, the students would be involved in monitoring and tracking the different variables that affect plant growth-- monitoring water quality, identifying and solving issues in plant health, and determining when to harvest their plants for different individualized projects. In addition to bringing the outdoors inside by growing a variety of plants, students will connect to the local community by donating the plants grown in class to support local food banks and organizations that support the hungry within our immediate area. While being immersed in inquiry based learning, students will be learning about sustainable agriculture techniques while studying topics related to health and wellness. Students will research plants that are nutrient rich that can best benefit those who are food insecure in our community. Students will be afforded the opportunity to connect with local professionals to learn what kinds of careers are in their area that use the skills developed from this year-long project. Many of the students in my grade level have family members who word and tend to the fields in our community. It is important to instill a sense of pride in their family's hard work and inspire careers that support our local agricultural community. The skills learned within our hydroponics studies will assist in developing skills related to real world career skills across multiple fields.
