Although reading in the age of digital and social media may be considered a dying fancy to some students, I teach students who have a knack for deep-diving into mysteries. Whether on-screen or on paper, my students love to solve mysteries and my goal is to use mystery novels to not only teach the state-mandated curriculum but to also genuinely implore students' to use critical thinking skills and empathy in their day-to-day interactions in society. Now more than ever, it is imperative that students take ownership in their education and it is my job to show them how essential their learning is in their ordinary lives. Merely reading mysteries may not greatly impact their lives 10 years from now, but the skill of critically thinking about the deeper implications of literature and the ways in which society responds to the world is a skill that is necessary for any job. Trying to uncover a "whodunit" is worthwhile for my students and if I could use that to get them to learn in a way that excites them, I'd be less than an effective teacher if I didn't give everything in my power to try to make learning more accessible to them. Plus, teaching students to picture their world through someone else's eyes only expands their imagination and adds to some compassion that the world could never get too much of. So, I say if the students want mysteries, let's give them mysteries!
