This year I am teaching an all virtual class for the whole year. The students will be at home, learning with me virtually. Reading a class novel together is such an essential part of any regular classroom. I need to make that experience happen for the students at home as well. This year I have a combination class of both 4th graders and 5th graders, so we cannot pick the usual 4th grade or 5th grade novels, because some of the kids have either already read the novel or will read it next year.
In addition, I think "Wonder" -- which teachers kindness and empathy -- is a very special book for my kids to read during this year when they are all facing the challenges of missing their friends. I know each one of my students will need extra support and understanding this year. Reading this book together is the perfect segue to those discussions. I want each one of my students to have their own copy of the book at home to read, enjoy and follow along during our class read alouds.
In addition to the social and emotional benefits of reading this book, it also is a great piece of literature, which will stretch and challenge my students. I'm so excited about launching our novel project.
