I am a 9th grade writing teacher in Massachusetts. As Massachusetts' first "Early College" public school, we believe every child should be given the opportunity to succeed. Our school prepares students to earn transferable college credits while in high school. Through my writing classes, I strive to instill a lifelong love of learning and writing to help our students reach their full academic potential. Developing a students writing skills is imperative to ensuring their success at both the high school and college levels. One of the best ways to become a better writer is to read good writing. As such, I have always aimed to create a diverse and accessible classroom library for my students. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and deserve to see themselves reflected in their literature. The local libraries are not always up to date with the latest in teen literature and even if they are, the teen literature they have does not usually properly reflect my student's lives. In my request, I have included a diverse selection of teen literature and poetry written by authors of color to better reflect my classroom. Please help me update my classroom library!
