Math data nation wide shows that second graders are likely to succeed if they have a solid, conceptual understanding of place value, addition and subtraction by the end of the school year. Now that we are in home learning, my remote math lessons will be so much more effective if my students can build the problems right along with me. They can "make a new group" when adding, or "ungroup" when subtracting, and physically build what is happening in the problem, with big numbers up to 1000. This solid base eventually bridges into mental math. Each family in financial need will receive a set of 1000 popsicle sticks and about 200 rubber bands.
