All of my students are reading below grade level. This is due to some of my students having a Specific Learning Disability while others do not have the foundation at home to assist them. One strategy that we are implementing in our English and Reading classes is the use of highlighters to annotate important information which will assist with their reading comprehension. Highlighters are a basic office supply that many of us take for granted. My students are currently using broken crayons and color pencils in place of highlighters because they cannot afford to go out and buy them. Providing each of my students with a set of highlighters will not only assist in increasing their reading level but will also motivate them to learn.
