Imagine sitting in the old, uncomfortable school desks for 7 hours a day. The seats are attached to the desks, so you can’t push back to stretch your legs, and you’re ten or eleven years old. My 5th grade students have been attending school in-person all five days during the school week. Current circumstances mean our students wear masks inside all day and must stay at their seats. They can't move around the classroom as they are used to. As my students’ need to move grows throughout the day, their focus shifts from learning to trying to sit still and daydreaming about recess so they can run and climb. Our school is far north in our state and experiences extremely low temperatures and often dangerous wind chills with the threat of frostbite. Indoor recess becomes a necessity many days, and my kids are stuck in their seats all day. They don’t have the option for using the gym since we are a K-12 building. These kids need to stand and move in order to bring their focus back to their school work. Due to the unfortunate circumstances we are experiencing this year, students have to social distance, wear masks, and remain seated at their desks. They eat breakfast and lunch in the classroom, and often have indoor recess due to extreme cold. They can't move around the classroom as much as they used to and have to be at their desks most of the day. If students have a standing desk, they have the option to stand and work, letting them stay more focused on their schoolwork.
