Studies have shown that babies can categorize people by the color of their skin by the age of 6 months and have formed ideas based on skin color by 3-5 years. In 2019, over 40% of children's books had white main characters and 29% had animals as the main character. Children need to see BIPOC characters as the hero, the protagonist, and the star to help form positive ideas about themselves and BIPOC people. This library would allow me to share books with very diverse characters. I frequently use literature/shared reading during groups as it promotes interest in literacy, exposure to vocabulary, text features, character development, figurative language, joint attention, as well as many other skills. Many of my students come from homes where they are not read to or they have limited access to books. Providing students with a diverse library is a vital part of helping them learn to be open-minded while promoting literacy skills. These books would be great form online learning as well!
