As we approach returning to in person learning during the pandemic, safety considerations will dramatically change the Montessori classroom. Children who normally sit in groups and work/explore in various areas of the room will be sitting alone and in assigned seats. Six year old students will be joining our classroom for the first time and will not be able to see the masked faces of their classmates and teachers. As Dr. Montessori states, “Only through freedom and environmental experience is it practically possible for human development to occur.” By adding the requested items to our classroom environment, students will be given some freedom to choose their learning environment while safely practicing social distancing: They may choose to move to one of the portable seats and use a clipboard to write rather than remain at their assigned seat; they may decide to bring a Montessori math material to one of the yoga mats to solve some math problems; chairs, clipboards and mats can be brought outside for some outdoor lessons. (Both the foldable chairs and the yoga mats can be wiped clean after each use). Children will be able to wear the button badges with photos of their faces so that others can see what their masked faces look like. All of these items will enhance classroom choices when social distancing is no longer required.
