After this year impacted by COVID-19 and stay-at-home orders, students not only have a fervent desire for classroom learning, but also for manipulatives that actually get them outside. I have found that offering students a glimpse into the world of plankton through a microscope can be fundamentally engaging. Plankton tow nets and cell scopes offer students a chance to collect living samples from the ocean they love and appreciate to peer into that microscopic universe. I know that with on-site plankton viewings, the students who may have tuned out the textbook reading from distance learning last year will quickly take interest in the hands-on lab. My students already have a passion for ocean science and this project will show them the outstanding opportunities to learn from that passion.
