As a history teacher, I always hear my students say, “Why do we need to learn this?” “How will this help me after I get out of middle school?” I always explain to them that they need to understand WHY our lives are what they are today in terms of culture, social structure, the type of economy, our politics etc. Having a current events resource like Junior Scholastic that has on level, engaging, and “touching” articles and visuals will spark their interest and keep them engaged. Scholastic also gives you additional resources to use with the articles like online links and videos that go great with the story. Stuff like that helps make them realize the connection between what we are learning in history now and all the current Issues going on in our state, country and world today! I hope to get online and paper copies of these scholastic magazines, so they will definitely be able to use them from home.
