I teach in a fabulous school in an amazing school district. It has always been a goal of mine to teach at a Title 1 school. I truly believe that students that live in economically disadvantaged communities deserve a quality education. I am blessed to have found a school home that shares my beliefs. However, teaching at a Title 1 campus has its disadvantages. The biggest disadvantage is the lack of budget for additional seating options in my classroom. Flexible seating options are a great way for students to take control of their learning experience. It provides them with an opportunity to choose a seating option that they believe will help them be the most successful in the learning environment. I have observed how students are most engaged in learning environments with choices. Classrooms thrive when students are leading their education. Currently, my students love to work around my classroom using clipboards. My students have become very creative with their seating choices in various areas of my classroom such as: under tables, bean bags, and lying or sitting on the carpet. I have even seen students sit under my easel. Nonetheless, I want my students to be comfortable as they work. As a new teacher, I am quickly realizing how costly creating a collaborative and welcoming classroom can be. The items I have chosen will provide my students with comfortable seating options during their independent work time. I have seen first hand how providing students with flexible seating options promotes community, collaborative partnerships, and student engagement. (Not to mention it’s incredibly FUN!) Your donation will help my young scholars learn in comfort!
