As we prepare to plan lessons during a pandemic, one thing that will never change is reading. Every year I strive to help students learn to love literacy. Even though there are many outlets to digital texts in today's world, there's something about holding a brand new book that gets students excited about reading. Imagine a virtual meeting session of three or four nine year-old students, who are all holding the same brand new novel in their hands, while sipping a cup of tea, and engaging in deep discussions about the book they are reading! With these book sets from Scholastic my students will be able to have this opportunity. They will be able to read their own novel and not have to worry about spreading germs from library or classroom books because these will be their very own. I plan to offer these best selling titles like, "Esperanza Rising," "Flora and Ulysses," and "Frindle" as choices for my students to select from. They will then be able to read and discuss through guided conversation stems via a virtual meeting session. The best part is that these books can be given to the students in the classroom setting as well as to the students who are learning from home remotely.
