Students will be given the texts "Survival in Auschwitz" along with another text of their choosing to read during our semester together. This specific text by Primo Levi will be sent home with students during the first 9 weeks of virtual learning. As students read through the text during this time. The text will be used to compare to other Jewish experiences during the Holocaust. The journals will be used to write their reactions, analysis and questions about "Survival in Auschwitz", as well as their self selected text during the second half of the semester. During our Socratic Seminar discussions students can choose to share these analytical or emotional reactions in order to further the depth of the class' perspective and understanding. Having students journal even if it is emotional reactions to text, is a critical developmental tool in teaching students to analyze readings.
