Now more than ever, during these unprecedented times, our students need to be engaged within the texts they are reading. My school will be starting the school year in a hybrid model. This means I will be able to use my classroom library with students both in person and use the text online to continue to connect and engage with students virtually. “It’s important that more books by authors of color featuring diverse characters make it into schools because all students (no matter their race, ethnicity, or sexual background) should be able to relate to the characters in novels and see that their culture is being represented in literature." Many of the books on my list will be used within the first few weeks of school. Whether in person, online, or behind a mask, I will take the time to build a genuine relationship with each student. These books will show them that they will be a part of a loving and inclusive classroom this school year.
