Students seem very disinterested in reading - more so than in previous years. This is my second year with my own classroom; it is the first year I will be teaching Language Arts. My classroom library is small, and continued COVID-19 concerns have me worried that we will have to close down our school library in the near future. My goal is to get books that students like, according to their interest inventories, in my class library. Harry Potter and Diary of a Wimpy kid were class favorites based on student responses. I am hoping even reading books they have read before will help them build on their literacy skills, develop their love for reading, and keep them more engaged during sustained silent reading time. Including books outside of their comfort zone will allow them to explore other genres as well.
