Learning an instrument is a big commitment for everyone involved! The school district supplies the instruments. Classroom teachers supply flexibility in scheduling. Families supply home structure, support, and patience. Students supply enthusiasm, curiosity, hard work, and perseverance. The "extras," such as reeds, are not supplied by the school or the district and can be a financial challenge for many families at the school. Without a dependable supply of good working reeds, a beginning saxophone or clarinet player cannot create a musical sound. The student often incorrectly believes the problem is not the poor reed, but their inability to play. This can lead to frustration, the desire to change instruments, or even quit. Because of the pandemic, our district is beginning the school year with a distance learning model. This means that students need to have a healthy supply of reeds at home for a good start to learning their instrument. With the reeds from this grant, students will have the supplies they need for that good start.
